Update: Well I was able to finish the strapping on the bottom and actually instal the vinyl on the bottom section quite easily. Then I started on the back rest... Well it turns out the backrest cover that was provied is about 2.5" shorter than the OEM cover so someone done messed up and sent me the wrong cover or they sewed it wrong. I’m really bummed because this process to this point has been pretty easy.

Kinja'd!!!

After about one hour of work I was able to remove the passenger seat, remove the old coverings, glue in the new foam and start installing the new straps. I’ve never done this before so this is learn as you go. The old seat frames are very thin and had more rust than the rest of the car combined. Hog ties? I guess that’s how they did things 50 years ago.

When this is done this might be the single biggest improvement to this car I’ve made.

Just ass sweat causing that rust, nothing to worry about.

I think they still use hog rings to install upholstery on cars. They did at least through 2000 on Volvos.

A lot of modern cars still use hog rings for upholstery.

As quaint as that was. Moisture from breathing/air humidity and composition of metal to attain desired qualities comes much closer. Foam is actually the component you should be looking at harder. Hogrings are much more inert over a longer time.

This was the more interesting of your projects for the Summer, H-DaF . Very non-mechanical. Good to hear it is going well and I hope the modern foam holds up well. Biofoam/regulations make pairing of open and closed cell challenging compared to years past.

Yeah that should be good. My seat is blown out but it seems to fit me ok so it hasn’t bothered me too much, I’m sure I’m sitting a few inches lower than usual though, then again so it the car..

I might do that depending on how the whole covid work thing goes. I wanted to get seats from Classic Car Seats but that might have to wait. My passenger seat is fine, the drivers is much worse. The seat covers are fine, I suspect they were changed at some point so I might only have to address the bottom of the driver seat, the back seems ok to me.

The seat kit I have is very easy to install on the bottom. I bet I could do a bottom including removing the seat and putting it back in less than 2 hrs. It’s a rubberized webbing that you hog ring under the foam.

I believe I even have the seat bottom strap kit in one of my boxes in storage , I did look at it, I remember those metal ring things. I just need the foam seat. Well the seat will fit in the wagon so I might do that at home again.

Hog Rings! I had a Volvo P 1800 with that webbing set up. Such a difference when I replaced them. Sa t a t least 2" higher, which was a good thing because P1800s had more blind spots than Ray Charles’ closet.
